Video Poker is a favored game that usually will be gambled on in casinos across the globe, or in your house on your home computer, through a net connection. The rules are very straightforward and involve the player attempting to get the highest combination of cards achievable in order to come away with cash. In this respect it is much the same as a classic game of poker, minus the line of contact with any other players. Of course, techniques employed during a physical game of poker, like bluffing, will be useless here.
The game of Video Poker starts when the gambler inserts credits (either tokens, credit slips or money) into the machine and presses the deal button. A five card hand will then be "handed out" on the video screen.
The Video Poker machine also has hold buttons, and enthusiasts should now choose which cards to hold and which to discard. For the cards the gambler would like to retain, the ‘hold’ buttons must be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can choose to keep any number of cards they want, from all to none.
After the player has selected which cards he or she wishes to keep, they should press ‘deal’, at which point any new cards will be dealt if desired. The round is now completed, with the Video Poker machine scanning the hand to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands printed on the pay out schedule.
Normally, the minimum winning hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the prize money getting larger for each better hand. A list of common winning hands starts with jacks or better, and moves on to two pairs, 3 of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It goes without saying that the pay out schedule can vary from game to game, so that skillful players are able to choose the most profitable machine every instance.
As soon as the first round has finished, the player can either decide to continue on in an attempt to increase their winnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any cash that they may have won. Further, a few styles of the game give the enthusiast a chance to double their profits, in which situation a further game is played. There are also variations among specific games, with some decks of cards including wild cards and other differing characteristics to increase playability.
